Thanks Mate ….Great video !! That lead unit sounds ” like” it has a miss to it…..maybe ? Doesn’t sound quite “right” to me…but the 2nd and trailing units sure sound good though. : )

@AstronomerCyclist refurbished not, these old girls are almost original. The only modern fittings are better seating, soundproofing and air conditioners. Most of the old stuff is owned by preservation groups and on hire to smaller operators.

Nice to see the modern / futuristic F3 / F7 style being refurbished and placed back into service. I think that style is the best looking diesel — ever.

I like the guy walking the dog at around 1:05, the dog obviously barking like crazy at the train.

Question, I’ve read the term “preserved”, like in rail museum pieces, or reserve fleet? Reminds me of a 105′ tug I worked on, 2 EMD 12 cylinder 645E2,s up and running pushing a loaded barge, almost to 900 RPM, racked out against the stop. We usually got 30,000 hours + between overhauls. Darn nice engines and a dream to work on.

I love the GM chatter they make.

I did not realize that was the gradient. I have a book that lists the power output of these EMD (Clyde, I believe units). Nonetheless, thank you for posting this great video. I actually learned about these units in “the Pictorial Encyclopedia of Railways” by C. Hamilton Ellis. It was published and purchased some forty years ago. Still, it is a handy, if dated reference.

@manthony1956 I’ll forgive you for not noticing the title of the video…it’s 1 in 52 to be precise. I think that every class of diesel electric that the VR had have now been on standard gauge at some time or another.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:01 am
WOW! What is the gradient here? I seem to recall these were wide gauge locomotives, were any ever converted to standard gauge?

Very nice video !

I see Australia also owns Safetran signals.Nice shot.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:00 pm
I guess you can call that a “FULL PULL”
…..
……hehe it would suck to run dry on diesel at the top whit no brakes!
October 30th, 2011 at 2:59 pm
@SuuriGuru I dread that we ever start using those utterly ridiculous bells outside of low speed maintenance facilities.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:25 pm
This is more like it – no bell, no horn blowing, just the diesels vs grade.

@75Bird455 Perhaps on the two big ones but it then goes on a time factor. The further in the red the less time permitted.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:54 pm
Wow man, I bet those units were operating well into the red on the loadmeter!
October 30th, 2011 at 4:24 pm
@Rocketboy1950… No, it was very good. I just think what would happen if I use HD cameras. Good job

@LanceCampeau This was shot some time back with an older Sony DCR-TRV50E standard definition unit. I have since changed to a Sony HVR Z5P.
October 30th, 2011 at 6:44 pm
wow…. good capture! What camera system is this?
October 30th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
Can it go any slower? Lol, I don’t think those Australian peeps have ever heard of a diesel particulate filter, lmao
October 30th, 2011 at 8:10 pm
Mate you have goto admit if only 6 poeople didn’t like this after 105 000 viewings it must be alright. I just tought my son (3.5 years) how to count to 30 watching this!
